Researchers from Applied Engineering Group of the University of Murcia has won what is considered the European Championship soccer robot, which was held in Rome in the Robocup.
The teams, which came from eight countries, is composed of three robots - goalkeeper and two outfield players - in human form and the creators faced the challenge of science and technology to develop highly complex software systems that enable the robots to understand the environment (computer vision) and make decisions and control the movement (quasi-dynamic bipedal locomotion).
The gentleman, who called the team and the researchers who participated also Polytechnic University of Valencia, won the final on penalty kicks before the whole German Humboldt University (Berlin).
Team officials, who have seven years to participate in such events, said that competition conditions were very complicated due to the lighting since it influences crucially on what the robots are able to see.
The vision system developed by the University of Murcia, they said, made a big difference with the other teams and let the robots could maneuver more accurate and reliable in-door pitches.
