The Official Journal of the Region of Murcia (BORM) published in today's edition of the decision of the Department of Fine and Cultural Heritage, under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, which initiate the declaration file of Interest Property Cultural (BIC), with archaeological zone category in favor of the archaeological remains of the suburbs of New Arrixaca located in San Esteban.
After initiating the file, the site has the highest degree of protection that is given to heritage and now will follow the legal and administrative proceedings for the final declaration of cultural interest.
The overall interest of the excavated area, because of its large size and the easy reading of the homes documented as well as having a broad sector of the urban fabric of the medieval suburb, justified in view of the Committee of Experts met on On 11th January 2010, the institution of record of cultural interest to the archaeological site category.
The Directorate General of Fine Arts waited for the meeting of the Committee of Experts for bringing this case because it had to decide not only the degree of protection of the site but also the legal definition applies in this case, because the Law of Cultural Heritage in the Region Murcia distinguish between Historic Sites, Monuments, a Historical and Archaeological Zone, among others.
Since the Committee of Experts will advise the Regional Directors throughout the recovery process and deposit musealization of San Esteban, it was necessary to voice its opinion on a bill that gives the maximum legal protection of cultural property.
