Optics Laboratory at the University of Murcia (LOUM) held these days a meeting with the participation of scientists from various countries in which it is discussing the latest developments in the causes of myopia and its possible control and correction.
The unresolved debate about the causes of this defect optical-due either to hereditary reasons, or to improper behavior, is of great importance, since the reasons of myopia can lead to develop procedures to prevent its development in children .
To understand these causes, the European Union is funding a research consortium in which MyEuropia-Optics Laboratory at the University of Murcia, headed by Professor Pablo Artal, Spanish group is the only participant.
LOUM research in myopia has been centered on the optical properties of the myopic eye in the retinal periphery and, based on these studies, has proposed a new type of lens used, not to correct myopia as conventional glasses, but to prevent it from developing in children.
The meeting will present these lenses to control myopia, which currently are under development.
