The commission of experts, meeting this afternoon with President Valcárcel, agrees to undertake in parallel the work of excavation, building structures and calls for tender for the museological and architectural design
The President of the Autonomous Community, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, received this afternoon at the Palacio de San Esteban to members of the expert commission formed to assess the interest and formulas archaeological conservation of San Esteban.
After consultation with members of the committee, meeting this morning at the headquarters of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the regional government has taken the decision to declare the site of San Esteban of Cultural Interest (BIC) as archaeological and how to create Murcia Medieval Foundation.
During their morning meeting, the committee immediately agreed to continue the excavation in certain areas, which will take place in parallel with the consolidation of structures, the protection of areas which are not covered and the convening of a public competition for museological and architectural design of the site.
The Directorate General of Fine Arts will issue a resolution setting out agreed by the committee and transferred to the City of Murcia, that will adopt these measures.
Decisions have been taken by experts and the Autonomous Region visited the site again and studied all documents relating thereto.
Conservation in situ
The commission members have indicated that the performance of regional and local authorities has been inadequate and that the site is not being destroyed.
They also considered that the elevation of the remains was an option under any circumstances constitute an act of destruction or plundering them, and it was technically possible.
However, correctly estimated the decision to retain 'in situ' and, therefore, the decision not to build the park.
At the meeting of the committee of experts have been present Professor of Medieval History at the University of Granada Antonio Malpica Cuello, the architect of Murcia, Heritage Restoration specialist, Prefasi Rafael Pardo, Professor of Medieval History Area, University of Murcia Jorge Eiroa Rodríguez, Professor of Medieval History Area, University of Murcia Juan Francisco Jiménez Alcázar, the Engineer of Roads, Channels and Ports Emilio Estrella Sevilla, and the director of the Institute of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Property in Valencia and representative of ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites Arts) Carmen Pérez García.
Have been excused for his help, to scheduling problems, Professor of Archaeology at the Universidad Complutense Jose Maria Luzon Nogué, and Professor of Archaeology at the University Rovira i Virgili de Tarragona Ricardo Mar Medina, who have been informed of the decisions the meeting.
Before the afternoon meeting with the president of the Community, which was also attended by Director of Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage, Enrique Ujaldón, members of the committee were received this morning by the Minister of Culture and Tourism, Pedro Alberto Cruz .
