The Community finances the construction of a network of bike lanes in Murcia over 53 kilometers (26/12/2009)

The regional government through the Ministry of Public Works and Planning, is funding the construction of a network of bike lanes in the town of Murcia which fosters sustainable mobility in the region through more than 53 kilometers of roads cyclists.

The new road will connect the city with the coast, such as bike lane Zeneta-San Javier highway, the center of the city campus and the hamlets of the South Coast, so as to provide citizens Regional cycling network to help promote sustainable mobility in three variants: daily mobility, leisure, culture and sports.

The director general of Transport and Ports, Carmen Sandoval, stated that "the regional government is funding 75 percent of the construction of the new bike path that connects the university campus and Los Jeronimos with Espinardo Murcia center."

This is a new cycle network to be structured around the north and west of Murcia and run along the Avenida Juan Carlos I to Espinardo, while connecting the University of Murcia with San Antonio Catholic University, to the existing bike path that starts on the Malecon.

The road will have a total length of 13.6 kilometers and is divided into three tracks: the section 0, which starts at Juan Carlos I and come to the campus through Espinardo Rectors, the vial of Terra Natura and the current bridge of the A-7, the section 1, including the bike path that starts on the Malecon and come to the hamlet of Rincon de Seca to finish at the Catholic University, and finally, the section 2, which will close previous routes, connecting the two campuses of the service road of the A-7.

Also, the Community is funding the new cycle of South Coast, which will have 10 kilometers and will link the east by Murcia Avenue in the area near the entrance of Algezares end with the West, as well as connecting with Road RM-302 (El Palmar Beniajan), in La Alberca.

Moreover, this week opened to traffic on the new bike lane Zeneta-San Javier highway, with a length of nearly 30 kilometers, will promote cycling in the environment of Mount Valley and the mountains of Altaona and Escalona, sites included in the European ecological network of special areas of conservation 'Natura 2000'.

Through this cycle path that runs parallel to the service road of the highway, you can also visit the Interpretation Center of Birds, which will enable citizens to discover the natural heritage of this protected area.

This is one of the longest bicycle routes in the region, linking the towns of San Javier, Zeneta and Sucina and structuring and will provide continuity to the network of cycle routes funded by the Autonomous Community with the aim of promoting sustainable mobility economic and energy saving and environmental quality.
