The cost of all preventive measures will be paid by the Municipality of Murcia
Local police and private security companies ensure 24 hours to prevent vandalism or looting of the site
The Director General of Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage, Enrique Ujaldón, along with the councilman of Culture of the Municipality of Murcia, Fátima Barnuevo, today introduced preventive measures to protect the site of San Esteban.
These measures were dictated by the Directorate General on the 16th December.
The meeting was attended by the Head of the Department of Archaeology, University of Murcia, Francisco Reyes, Professor of Archaeology at the University of Murcia, Sebastian Ramallo, the dean of the College of Engineering, John Guillamón, and Section Chief Archaeology of the Consistory, Carmen Martínez.
The experts agreed on the adequacy of measures proposed by the Department of Fine Arts.
For its part, the City of Murcia today announced that it will begin implementing the measures of cleanliness and safety and security protocol to avoid vandalism and theft.
They also reported the protective measures to be taken of the site temporarily, until they determine the final project, and compelling urgency.
And adopt the agreed measures are:
- This morning will begin cleanup work with the manual collection of materials outside the site under archaeological supervision and structured a consolidation of weakened structures.
The report explains that it is possible to make a final consolidation until there arises a total project of rehabilitating the site.
- In the presence of moss and fungal colonies, up to a broad spectrum biocide and avoid the proliferation of roots that can cause moisture and cause deterioration of the remains.
Due to the temporary effect of herbicides, cleaning and spraying will be periodic.
- The structures that may be deficient in conservation, such as stones, bricks and loose masonry is reinforced with treatments that do not interfere with subsequent actions of consolidation.
- The pavements, structures and excavation cutting type protected by geotextile fabric, and to prevent the material sticking to the pavement, extend a thin layer of washed river sand mixed with herbicide.
- Once a resumption of the intervention and eventual recovery of the deposit will be held in phases synchronized with unearthing the point of restoration treatments.
Experts meeting also agreed to conduct a photographic for documenting the conservation of archaeological remains, treatments that are implemented and any other information that is relevant both for the restoration to a better understanding of the work.
After the intervention compile a detailed report which will reflect all the treatments.
Within the memory will include photographic documentation collected during the intervention.
Monitoring device
The Local Police Headquarters has set an Action Protocol in order to prevent vandalism and looting at the site.
Thus, two devices are set for action.
The first corresponds to a private monitoring service immediately inform the local police of any development or incident occurring in the reservoir surroundings.
The second rests with the local police assigned to patrol on each shift.
Watch This Protocol will remain active until circumstances arise that warrant its modification and in any case will remain constant vigilance.
This protocol has been sent today to the Department of Fine Arts and Cultural Assets.
The Directorate General and the Department of Culture of the Municipality of Murcia also propose to the commission of experts to decide on the conservation and protection of the site of St. Stephen to create a technical committee formed by professionals from the region to take actions concerning in this field more quickly and track daily of what happens.
In this technical committee will include representatives from the University of Murcia, the College of Engineers and Architects Association of the Region of Murcia and experts from the Directorate General of Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage and the city of Murcia.
There will also be restorers and experts in Islamic history.
