Ecologists in Action have submitted complaints to the city of Murcia and the Ministry of Agriculture and Water, denouncing the episodes of air pollution and deteriorating air quality PM10 microparticles detected by the regional network of stations measuring pollutants.
The exceedances of limit values for particulate matter have their origin in the deterioration of air quality in Murcia should be sought in the increase in emissions from road traffic, industrial activities, which has added some episodes of intrusion Saharan dust in the middle of the month.
The environmental organization alleged that during the month November, have exceeded the limit value of protecting the health of suspended particles, which is 50 micrograms per cubic meter in the following areas
San Basilio station
13/11/2009- 51 micrograms / cubic meter
14/11/2009- 65 ug/m3
15/11/2009- 58 ug/m3
16/11/2009- 64 ug/m3
17/11/2009- 81 ug/m3
18/11/2009- 88 ug/m3
19/11/2009- 79 ug/m3
20/11/2009- 78
19/11/2009- 82
19/11/2009- 53
Murcia-Sewer Station
01/11/2009- 55 ug/m3
02/11/2009- 53 ug/m3
16/11/2009- 54 ug/m3
It is particularly worrying that nearly half of the month (14 days) San Basilio station has had exceedances of the limit value for public health protection.
PM10 microparticles suspended in the atmosphere are causing serious health problems.
These particles penetrate the lower respiratory tract and cause serious conditions to ducts and respiratory system.
Particles PM10 pollutants can cause respiratory diseases, asthma, and aggravation of allergic conditions, emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cardiovascular problems, among others.
Ecologists in Action complaint inactivity and passivity of the authorities to repeated episodes of deterioration of air quality has not taken any action in recent years to prevent these episodes of deteriorating air quality.
Ecologists in Action said that while it can do little about the intrusions of Saharan dust, neither the Council nor the Department have plans of action to control emissions from road traffic and industrial (mandatory by Royal Decree 1073/2002, of 18 October, assessment and management of air quality in relation to sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, lead, benzene and carbon monoxide).
