UCAM has concluded, with the Hispanic Foundation of Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Diseases (FHOEMO), the celebration of World Osteoporosis Day.
For this reason, the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Physical Activity and Sport, Dr. Andrés Martínez Almagro, has given this morning a conferenciacoloquio entitled 'Osteoporosis: get to know it and avoid it', focused on knowledge and prevention of this disease.
The event was attended by the directors of the degrees of Health Sciences and Sport, as well as multiple members of the university community.
The director of the Central Unit of Anatomy, UCAM, Dr. Andrés Martínez Almagro, referred to osteoporosis as "a serious global health problem" and noted that the EU "an osteoporotic fracture occurs every thirty seconds ".
The professor has stressed that osteoporosis is a disease that "is not linked to aging as is commonly believed, and as a disease that is can be diagnosed and treated appropriately."
It has also asserted that in Spain, and many other countries, "osteoporosis is a disease underestimated, underdiagnosed and undertreated."
The dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Physical Activity and Sport, Andrés Martínez Almagro, has stressed the need for awareness on the prevention of osteoporosis, which affects more women.
Preventive measures indicated the completion of regular physical activity, increased consumption of calcium and vitamin D, and moderate exposure to sunlight throughout the year, natural source of vitamin latter.
