The Family Respite Service Addresses, under the Department of Social Welfare and Promotion of Equality, which was launched first in the town of Murcia in 2002, has served a total of 563 families with dependents until September 2009.
Of 1,429 hours has passed 15,695 in 2008.
At its inception, the service was used exclusively for the elderly, but in 2004 it was extended to the disabled, as a pilot, and now both programs are unified in a single draft attention to situations of functional dependence.
The attention and care of a dependent person is a prolonged experience required, in many cases, reorganization of family life, work and social integration of people who are responsible to care.
The care provided by their immediate families is preferred by the elderly and such care includes activities as diverse as usual coping behaviors, communication with people who may have difficulty expressing, managing stress, grooming everyday life, walking aids and much more.
In most families is a single person who takes most of the responsibility of care.
Most of these caregivers are women: wives, daughters and wives.
So much so that eight out of ten people who are caring for an elderly relative in our country are women between 45 and 65 years of age.
Despite the predominance of women in the field of caring, men are increasingly involved in the care of dependent persons either as caregivers or as assistants to the primary caregivers, which means a gradual change of the situation.
The service is regulated by annual notice published in the Official Gazette of the Region of Murcia, since 2006, and is primarily aimed at families who are in some of the following situations:
