The candidates 'Courts of irrigators in the Spanish Mediterranean: the Council of Good Men of the Huerta de Murcia and the Tribunal de las Aguas de la Vega de Valencia' was proclaimed today Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in the Intergovernmental Committee for Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Unesco held in Abu Dhabi (UAE).
It has also been declared the whistle gum submitted by the Canarian Government.
The Minister of Culture and Tourism, Pedro Alberto Cruz, said that this statement "is a matter of great happiness and great news for the Region of Murcia, as it is first of its institutions including one of their cultural traditions within the long list of Unesco. "
Cruz also stated that "previously had been declared a World Heritage Site the cave paintings of the Mediterranean, within which, naturally, are included in the Region of Murcia."
Cruz Council congratulated the Good Men and noted the need to "continue to ensure that in future, other traditions continue to strengthen intangible heritage list of UNESCO because ultimately this will benefit the region, its image and culture, and I think there is no better way to secure the future of this tradition so dilated that their inclusion in lists of such prestige, reputation and importance as that of UNESCO. The Region of Murcia and Valencia had the application of the Council of Good Men and the Tribunal de las Aguas de Valencia to Unesco in September last year.
This process began following approval by the Heritage Council at its October 2007 meeting held in Cartagena.
During the meeting, the committee noted, among over a hundred submitted two applications for quality, one of Murcia and Valencia.
The committee congratulated the representatives of both communities for the work done with the nomination of the Council of Good Men and the Water Court, emphasizing the quality of its content.
According to the Committee, may serve as models for future nominations.
The Committee has examined over one hundred nominations for inscription on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and 12 for the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.
The Committee will select the programs, projects or activities that it considers best reflect the principles and objectives of the Convention.
Thanks to this registration practices, the Committee hopes to raise public awareness about the importance of intangible heritage and its preservation.
Intangible Heritage Convention of UNESCO calls for the safeguarding of elements such as oral traditions and expressions, rituals and festive, craftsmanship, music, dances and traditional performances on the grounds that living heritage, transmitted from generation to generation, provides communities and groups who practice a sense of identity and continuity, considered essential to the respect for cultural diversity and human creativity.
The Council of Good Men and the Water Court are the bodies responsible for dispensing justice within the traditional irrigation communities of the orchards of Murcia and Valencia.
Its members are farmers, independent and democratically elected by the users of irrigation canals.
Both courts resolve conflicts between irrigators, oral, rapid, economic, public and impartial.
Their inclusion on the Representative List pursues a recognition not only of the two institutions, but of all traditional irrigation communities, basic cultural evidence of water in the Spanish Levante and relevant creations of human culture.
