Native fish species of the Murcia region are increasingly threatened, while the exotic "are becoming more abundant and are better acclimated" as one of the conclusions of the doctoral thesis at the University of Murcia by Mary Asunción Andreu Soler.
This research, which was led by Professor Maria del Mar Torralva, has been studying the epicontinental fish fauna of the region of Murcia, to analyze the problems faced and suggestions for their conservation.
The study, which analyzes the existing fish species in places such as wetlands and sources indicates that "while ichthyofaunistic wealth has increased in the region, there is a marked decline in the occupancy of the native species.
The author of the thesis deal primarily with four species accounting for eighty percent of all native whose regression has been paralleled by the presence of seven new ones.
The dissertation considers the hazards that affect the presence of native fish are due in large part to the "degradation of river systems in the region."
