The Governing Council has approved an aid of 44,200 euros to the University of Murcia (UMU) for conducting a research on "Genetic characterization of the Chato Murciano pig breed using molecular markers."
This local breed is classified as Special Protection breed in danger of extinction.
Therefore, since 1977, conducts a program of restoration and conservation of this species, with the participation of Murcia Institute for Research and Agricultural Development and Food (IMID), the Center for Integrated Agricultural Training and Experience (CIFE) Lorca and UMU, with several lines of research are necessary.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Water, with the involvement of farmers producing flat Murcia, is conducting a training program and technology transfer for development of the local breed through an agreement with the Association of health protection of pigs Lorca (ADESPA-Lorca) and Breeders Association for the conservation and recovery of the Chato Murciano.
