On Friday 17 July saw the public defense of the doctoral thesis of D.
Antonio Gonzalez Sarria:''Metabolism and tissue distribution of urolitinas generated in vivo from the grenade.
Antiproliferative and anti-inflammatory, gene expression and mechanisms of action, directed by Dr. Juan Carlos Espin de Gea, Maria Teresa Garcia Conesa and Francisco Tomas Barberan, researchers at the Department of Food Science and Technology of CEBAS-CSIC, and obtained the highest rating (Excellent Cum Laude).
This thesis has also benefited from the significant involvement of Dr. Larry Mar Pérez, the same department.
The benefit to health reporting consumption of fruits and vegetables has been mainly associated with the presence of a group of substances called "polyphenols", which are abundant in plant foods and their derivatives such as juices, red wine and tea.
A fruit particularly rich in polyphenols is the pomegranate.
The benefits of consuming pomegranate had been traditionally linked to the activity of a specific group of polyphenols called 'ellagitannins' (also found in walnuts, strawberries, raspberries, red wine or raising reserve, etc..).
However, this research group had already described above, for the first time ever, that these compounds, after being ingested, were transformed by the intestinal flora to give rise to other substances called urolitinas which could be responsible for the benefits related to the grenade.
Therefore, the fundamental objective of the thesis was recently presented to investigate the possible role of these urolitinas health.
The results of this thesis confirm the beneficial role of the shell through its anti-inflammatory and anticancer decreasing the expression of various genes and markers involved in the development of these pathologies.
In this thesis tests have been developed in cells, rats and in patients with prostate cancer in collaboration with the Hospital Reina Sofía de Murcia.
The main benefits of pomegranate seem to have these urolitinas that originate mainly in the colon and is where mainly exert their action.
This thesis also shows that the reach urolitinas human prostate where they could have an effect against prostate cancer, being responsible for the benefits of pomegranate suggested in this type of cancer.
However, an important fact is that not all people are capable of producing urolitinas alike (because we have different intestinal flora), implying a possible effect of pomegranate different for each person.
Two key aspects to investigate this group of CEBAS-CSIC today on this issue is the identification of the intestinal flora responsible for the production of urolitinas and the protective role of pomegranate in patients with inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel .
Research carried out by D.
Antonio Gonzalez Sarria within this research group has led to nine papers published in international journals with high impact.
The results of this thesis has aroused the interest of companies for the development of supplements with health benefits obtained from the grenade.
