The Mayor, Miguel Ángel Cámara, received this morning the Solidarity Award given to "people of Murcia" by the NGO Action Blue "for its high commitment and demonstrated support for charitable causes each year, both in helping society most in need of Murcia, as in the partnership for cooperation in third world countries, for their historic tolerance for other cultures and being a home town, welcomes and works with any initiative that acts as an aid to the disadvantaged " .
This is the first time that is granted this award, given to individuals, institutions or social groups that have played an important charitable work, both in helping the disadvantaged, both in Spain and abroad, such as tolerance to certain social groups at risk of exclusion.
The distinction also appreciates the support of social causes such as gender equality, aid to vulnerable populations, especially children and elderly people and have helped to keep alive, in Spanish society, the spirit of solidarity.
Blue Award Action for Solidarity, is symbolized by a bronze sculpture by Antonio Campillo, depicting a woman carrying a child in her arms, a symbol of pure love, devotion and unconditional solidarity.
Murcia artist donated the work to the NGO Action Azul a few days before his death, to be a symbol of this annual award to solidarity.
Ten years and 39 cooperation projects
Blue NGO ActionAid, founded in 1999 within the Local Police in Murcia, aims to intervene in development cooperation and humanitarian assistance in the field of health, education and basic infrastructure construction .
Result of this work has been carried out 39 cooperation projects in different countries such as Togo, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Peru, Western Sahara, Benin, etc.
Were also carried out several projects to help disadvantaged groups in Murcia and have promoted numerous campaigns and actions in the region to promote education and social awareness of development cooperation.
Among the 39 projects highlighted:
Building a health center "Hospital Ciudad de Murcia" in the Moroccan Sahara.
Construction of a reception center for nomadic children "Internship Murcia City."
Two intervention projects in ophthalmology in northern Togo, which have resulted in the recovery of sight to over 300 blind and the application of more than 3,500 treatments of eye diseases.
Distribution of more than 110 articulated beds for people with physical disabilities in the Region of Murcia and without economic means to acquire them.
Construction of a Vocational Training Center in sewing for women in Northern Togo.
Support for literacy and adult education in 50 villages of the Moroccan Sahara and High Atlas.
