Researcher Sonia Maria Lopez Noguera has defended the act of living CEBAS-CSIC her doctoral thesis entitled "Getting free apricot plants transformed markers" on breeding of apricot, with which it has obtained
Cum Laude rating.
The thesis, directed by Professor Lorenzo Burgos CSIC research has been conducted at the Centre for Soil Science and Applied Biology Segura, even for academic purposes the title was awarded by the Polytechnic University of Cartagena.
The tribunal was chaired by Dr. Marisa Badenes, vocal, Drs Magdalena Cervera, Enrique Olmos and Nuria Alburquerque, and Dr. Maria Angeles Ferrer, as Secretary.
The apricot is one of the most important, economically and within the stone fruit in the Mediterranean basin countries.
In recent years the emergence of the virus PPV (Plum Pox Virus) has reduced the extent of cultivation in Europe.
Many breeding programs have focused on producing varieties that are resistant to that virus.
Genetic transformation could enable the production of improved varieties through discrete changes in elite varieties in a relatively short time, once the protocols are developed.
The thesis has shown that you can remove the marker genes of the transformed plants of apricot.
This work will, in future, decide the most appropriate construction to produce transformed apricot plants containing only the genes of interest and can be more easily marketed and accepted by the consumer.
