Wines of the Region of Murcia were 24 of the 32 awards from the seven categories assessed in the 'National Wine Competition Monastrell', which this year celebrated its ninth edition in the halls of the Mansion's Silk Murcia.
The Brotherhood of the Kingdom of the Monastrell wine, with the collaboration of the Ministry of Agriculture and Water, through Bodega Murciano Experimental Research Institute and Agricultural Development and Food (IMID), decided the awards after taste and analyze the jury a total of 105 samples from 35 wineries in the names of Alicante, Almansa, Bullas, Jumilla, Valencia, Yecla and Castilla-La Mancha.
The tasting panel consisted of expert tasters, somelieres, technicians and journalists.
The conditions evaluated were rosé wines, red wines from the vintages 2007 and 2008 without wood, red wines from the vintages 2007 and 2008 with wood, red wines from vintages prior to 2007, fortified wines, wines with oxidative aging overripe grapes and wines.
National Competition Monastrell wines, held in the region since 2000, brings together the best national samples made with this grape variety, with a progressive increase in the number of samples presented in each edition, as in high quality of the wines involved.
Specifically, this year, participation increased by five percent.
The contest recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, requires that wines have a geographical indication and that its composition is formed by at least 50 percent Monastrell grape.
The awards ceremony will be held on 25 April in the Mansion of the Silk Road.
