The regional government has approved the signing of an agreement between the Ministry of Universities, Business and Research, University of Murcia (UMU) and the Ministry of Education and Science to form the Interdisciplinary Experimentation Platform for Earth Science and Life ( Pleiades) as a pioneering multidisciplinary research area in the region to promote research and technology transfer.

To this end, the agreement provides for a cash prize of 5.8 million euros available to the UMU.

The project will create a research area by bringing together different research units with common goals related to areas of tissue culture, molecular biology, microscopy, and aquaculture laboratory, among others.

The center, which will have a total area of 6,500 square meters, consists of four modules and is located in the northern part of campus de Espinardo, physical space research groups the UMU, the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CEBAS-CSIC) Science Park and Murcia.

The development of this infrastructure will be a qualitative increase in scientific production and technology transfer UMU and therefore the region, while the momentum of the technology transfer process will increase the communication with the business.

This initiative will be financed with EUR 4,060,000 (70 percent) by the European ERDF Operational Programme 2007-2013 of knowledge-based economy, while the remaining amount, EUR 1,740,000 (30 percent), will be contributed by UMU.

Under the agreement approved today, the region and the Ministry of Education and Science indicate the project as a priority and suitable for obtaining those ERDF.
