House and President of Eurocities Mobility Forum 0participa in Sustainable Energy Week EU
The Mayor of Murcia, Miguel Ángel Cámara, signed in Brussels on Tuesday the Covenant of Mayors, a tool to promote sustainable development of cities and which was proposed by the European Commission a year ago.
The aim is saving and energy efficiency and combating climate change.
This was explained this morning, accompanied by the Councillor for the Environment, Adela Martinez-cache.
Local Agency for Energy and Climate Change is responsible for meeting all the goals reflected in the covenant.
The Covenant of Mayors is considered the most ambitious initiative driven so far to facilitate citizen participation in the fight against climate change.
Murcia and Madrid were the first Spanish cities in joining, which were soon followed by Amsterdam, Paris, London, Rome, Lisbon, Helsinki, Stockholm and Warsaw, among others.
In just one year, hundreds of European cities have joined the Covenant, which will be officially signed next Tuesday.
The importance of this Covenant is that the signatories are committed to exceed the forecast established by the Heads of State by 2020 and reduce by more than 20% of CO2 emissions in each country.
Among the actions that commit the Mayors include:
Go beyond the targets set by the EU for 2020, reducing CO2 emissions in our respective regions in at least 20% by implementing an Action Plan for Sustainable Energy.
Develop a baseline emissions inventory as the basis for the Plan of Action for Sustainable Energy.
Presenting the Action Plan for Energy.
Adapt the structures of the municipality for the development of the necessary actions.
Mobilize civil society in our respective regions to participate in developing the Action Plan.
Leading European
Miguel Angel House, as President of the Eurocities Mobility Forum, will also participate in various events planned in connection with the Sustainable Energy Week.
Murcia over the coming years will be the official headquarters of the largest network of European cities, the so-called European Mobility Forum (Eurocities).
Founded in 1986, provides a platform EUROCITIES
which belong to 30 European countries, and thousands of municipalities, to enable its members to share knowledge, exchange experiences, to discuss common problems and develop enterprise solutions through forums, workshops, projects, activities and events.
According to the protocol of the ceremony, Mayor House, along with the other councilors first guest will be received at 13.45 hours by the European Commission President, José Manuel Durão Barroso.
Then proceed to the solemn opening ceremony of the Covenant of Mayors in the Chamber Hall of Parliament.
Among the planned measures is the President of the European Investment Bank, Philippe Maystadt, Andris Piebalgs, European Commissioner for Energy, Luc Van den Brande, president of the Committee of the Regions, and Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York.
Chronology of the Covenant
January 2008: We presented the initiative in the European Week of Sustainable Energy.
Murcia and Madrid are the first Spanish capital to join the pact.
April 30, 2008: The consultation period closes.
June 2008: We present the final version of the Covenant.
February 2009: Signing of the Covenant.
Several events in some cities that prior expressed their commitment to adhere to the covenant (Eurocities in Murcia, Committee of the Regions in Brussels, Aachen Climate Alliance, Energie-Cités in Cork, ICLEI in Rovigo, or a meeting of several European cities to discuss economic issues in Helsinki last November, etc ...).
