The Ministry of Agriculture and Water, a proposal from the Spanish Association of Irrigation and Drainage (AERYD) has begun preparations for the celebration of the XXVII National Irrigation Congress, to be held in Murcia from 16 to 18 June next, under the theme "Irrigation, motor development and food supply."
The Congress will focus on four major themes: agrohidrología; environmental effects of irrigation water and modernization of irrigation engineering and management, as well as law and economics of irrigation.
The Organizing Committee of this Congress is chaired by the Director General of Operations and Training Modernization of Agricultural, Ángel García Lidón, and it comprises leading specialists in this area of the Ministry of Environment, Rural and Marine Affairs, the Ministry of Agriculture and Water; AERYD Association, the Spanish National Committee on Irrigation and Drainage (CERYD) national companies and SEIASA TRAGSA, the Central Union of Irrigation Aqueduct Tajo Segura, the School of Agricultural Engineering of Cartagena, the city of Murcia, and Professional Associations of Agricultural Engineers and Agricultural Engineers.
The Organizing Committee members met this week to design the organization of a panel discussion entitled "Irrigation with reclaimed water.
Possible solutions to water deficit ', and discuss the various proposals for papers to be treated.
The presentations will address the optimization of wastewater treatment plants, new technologies to reduce energy costs in water reclamation processes, physical and microbiological quality of reclaimed water and its conditions for employment in agriculture, environmental impacts Application of saline water, brackish and wastewater, the regional balance of availability subject to regeneration and the problems of the application of reclaimed water, among others.
The example of Murcia
According to Garcia Lidón, the use of reclaimed water for irrigation is "a resource that must be taken into account to alleviate the structural water deficit."
In this regard notes that "the Region of Murcia is a clear example to follow as we have over 100 hectometres of reclaimed water per year, representing 25 percent of this water in Spain."
This is possible, he adds, because "it has carried out an efficient policy for sanitation and water purification and, currently, 99 percent of the urban population in our region is connected to the sewerage system and 97 percent to sewage. "
Responsible for regional "water policy must be based on three pillars: water efficiency through modernization of irrigation systems, reclaimed water reuse and transfer of resources."
This, he concludes, in a global context chaired by "the return water as a source of economic resources and jobs."
In this regard, he recalled that "the World Bank believes that agriculture is part of the solution to the current crisis."
