The mayor of IU + Greens in the city of Murcia, Esther Herguedas, today criticized budget cuts to the Department of Housing, Transport and Trade for 2009, especially in the chapter on investment for the construction of public housing and municipal service bus.
In transport, Herguedas said that the municipality has cut investment by 19.6 percent over 2008, which, in his opinion, "makes clear that there is no real policy to strengthen and put in value the public media in the municipality of Murcia. "
He insisted that the rise recorded in the public transport subsidy last year "was justified by the council as a way to continue lowering the price of the bus, but the truth is that it has risen on several occasions and well above the Consumer Price (RPI). "
Herguedas added in this sense that "no one knows what public transport policy can be expected from this council for next year, and is limited only to continue to support a private company that does not meet the needs of citizens."
Also, the Councillor for IU + Greens highlighted the reduction of investment to consumption by 43.3 percent, and the one for traditional trade (-3.03 percent), and the market hall and shopping arcade San Andrés (-10.07).
In this regard, Herguedas explained that these cuts will occur "in times of crisis and the difficulties of competition with the supermarkets, when they consistently have been stronger efforts to support the traditional trade."
He stressed that the budget of the Presidency and Heritage "is one of the least low, but who resent investments in individual subjects, with 61, and 52.33 percent less than in 2008, representing a 55, 7 less than average, so for this year's municipal equipment replacement and acquisition of municipal property and public land will come under minimal.
