The Museum of Fine Arts of Murcia continues with the lecture series that delves into the history of Judaism (01/12/2008)

Orot The lecture series, sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism together with the separate foundation Beitenu, continues in December with three lectures by the head of programming separate house-Israel, Esther Bendahan, specialist in Spanish literature of Jewish Uriel Macías, and a doctorate in art history at New York University and a professor at Boston University in Madrid Cindy Mack.

All lectures take place at the Museo de Bellas Artes de Murcia at 20:00.

Bendahan offer the December 4 conference 'The story of Esther.

God and his costume in history ', in which, from a forthcoming novel, will reread the book of Esther.

Esther is a character that is situated in the Persian empire, we can analyze the events of Jewish history in relation to the power, authority and conflict.

Esther in the Persian empire is chosen by the king and queen.

But a minister of King promotes an edict expelling the Jews from there and creates a conflict which tells how one suddenly becomes alien to society and dangerous.

Esther's story is both timely and to reflect on the relationships between men and women, between the powerful and subjects, between majority and minority in society.

On December 10, Uriel Macías will give the presentation "Between the coming and return: The Jews in Contemporary Spain ', which will provide an overview of the history of the Jews in Spain from the twentieth century.

The different legal frameworks in which Jewish life has developed, the different waves of migration and its origin and the institutions around which is organized will be the main issues to be addressed.

Since the abolition of the Inquisition in 1834 began the first Jews to settle after nearly 350 of total absence in the wake of the Edict of Expulsion of 1492, although the former Jewish communities, at least in mainland Spain, it will begin to organize until first decades of the twentieth century.

Finally, on December 17 will be a conference under the title 'The illuminated Hebrew manuscripts, images of Judaism, "Cindy offered Mack.

Mack explains how medieval Spain was the scene of the execution of important illuminated Hebrew manuscripts, from which magnificent miniature and evoked describing various aspects of culture, religion and Jewish history.

The detailed study and analysis of these images allow a better understanding and a new vision of the history of Jewish communities and their traditions, customs and beliefs, and opens a new and different way to one of the most interesting chapters of our past .

Mack will make comparisons with some Christian manuscripts.

Esther Bendahan, born in Tetuan (Morocco) in a family of Judeo-Spanish, studied Psychology and French Studies in Madrid.

He is currently director of the television program "Shalom" (Spanish TV La2) and Head of Programming at the Casa Sefarad-Israel, regularly writes articles and reports in various publications.

Uriel Macias is a specialist in Spanish literature of Judaism.

He coordinated issues, courses, conferences and exhibitions on various aspects of the Sephardic world and history of Jews in contemporary Spain.

He is the author of Megillat Ruth in Hebrew and Ladino (1988), Jewish literature Spanish Guide (1992), Order of the xed Yael (1994), Towards a bibliography judeoextremeña (1995) and Spanish Judaica Library 2003 (2003), among other books and articles, and co-author with Elena Romero of the Jews in Europe: A legacy of 2000 years (1994) and with Jacobo Israel Garzón of the Jewish community of Madrid: Texts and pictures for a story, from 1917 to 2001 ( 2001).

Cindy Mack holds a doctorate in art history at New York University and a professor at Boston University in Madrid.

He has collaborated with the Center of Jewish Art at Hebrew University of Jerusalem for over twenty years.

He specializes in Judaica and Hebrew illuminated manuscripts, books and coauthor of Spanish Art in New York (El Viso, Madrid, 2004) and seekers of beauty (Ariel, Barcelona, 2007), which deals with the lives of some of the most great collectors of art in the world of the mid-nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century.
