Good practices in events and sports facilities (13/11/2008)

The Department of Sports and Environment and Urban Quality join forces to promote sports and sports events are more committed to the environment.

The Councillor for Sports, Miguel Cascales, and the Environment Councillor, Adela Martinez-Cacho, implement measures of the project 'Green Games' to ensure the implementation of good environmental practices in sport.

Last month the city of Murcia acceded to the Convention 'Play Green' signed between the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) and the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) to implement environmental and sustainability criteria to the sport at the local level.

At the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, articulated the Agenda 21 action plan that aims at preserving the environment and the promotion of sustainable development.

In 1999, the IOC approved the Olympic Movement's Agenda 21 and declared the environment as a third pillar of Olympism, alongside sport and culture.

Recently it has created the Environment Committee within the Spanish Olympic Committee and approaches have been implemented environmental projects such as the Madrid 2012 Olympic bid.
