A doctoral thesis at the University of Murcia by Francisco José Romera Guirado highlights among its conclusions that the chickenpox vaccine can prevent 91.2 percent of cases.
To carry out this research, the author, who has obtained the qualification of outstanding cum laude, analyzed the results of a chickenpox outbreak emerged in a school in Totana in the 2009-2010 academic year, which affected, in particular, students under 13 attending the same class.
51 varicella outbreaks were detected, with a median of three cases per outbreak, with a global vaccination coverage of 10.7 percent, always much higher in students of Spanish nationality in foreigners.
The study concludes that there is a high effectiveness of the vaccine and, in particular, when two doses of the vaccine are administered.
The dissertation was directed by professors at the University of Murcia Maria Ruzafa Martínez and Yolanda Molina Encarnacion Salas.
