The events organized by the Catholic University are generating thousands of overnight stays in the region of Murcia, and elite athletes Murcia promote worldwide
The Catholic University of Murcia took part today in the stand of the Region of Murcia at the International Tourism Fair (FITUR), in a ceremony which involved Noelia Arroyo, Minister of Culture and Spokesman;
Juan Hernandez, Minister of Economic Development, Tourism and Employment, and Cardinal Miguel, Secretary of State for Sport.
They all stressed the importance of sport for the tourism sector and its growing impact on the brand 'Murcia' and the number of visits made to influence the region.
In this sense, the UCAM has a starring role thanks to its Olympians, sports equipment and testing organized directly or with which it collaborates.
Secretary of State for Sport has spoken of the qualities of the Region of Murcia as a destination for athletes from experience "since I have lived some time in Murcia and is ideal for visitors who want to practice sport."
Juan Hernandez stressed the growing importance of sport for tourism "because in 2016 the region will bring more than 15,000 visitors with an economic impact of about 5 million euros".
So I wanted to influence "the great work being done by the UCAM when organizing sports events and sponsoring athletes who bear the name of our region throughout the world."
In this sense, Noelia Arroyo recalled that the strength of the region for sports tourism is the climate: "The Region of Murcia is ideal for the sport year-round destination."
The event was wrapped six Olympians UCAM: Miguel Angel Lopez (World Champion 20 kms up in Beijing 2015 and European Champion in Zurich 2014), Ruth Beitia (the Diamond League champion in the high jump 2015, and European Champion 2014 in Zurich), Joel Gonzalez (taekwondo Olympic champion in London 2012. Three medals in world championships, and two medals at European Championships), Brigitte Yagüe (taekwondo Olympic silver medals in London in 2012. Six World Championships and six medals at European Championships), Thaïs Henríquez (double Olympic medalist in synchronized swimming. Twelve medals at World Championships and eight medals at European Championships) and David Cal (canoeist and maximum Spanish Olympic medalist. Among athletes, Murcia Miguel Angel Lopez highlighted some of the many qualities of the region as a destination for sports tourism, "I had the opportunity to travel throughout Spain and around the world and there are few places with conditions our region for sports. Also, in my case I have the luck to have the support of the UCAM, which allows me to combine studies with competitions and training. "
