A campaign seeks to improve recycling rates of packaging and paper (14/12/2015)

The Department of Public Works, headed Roque Ortiz, continues its efforts to improve street cleaning and waste collection in order that Murcia is one of the cleanest cities of Spain.

After launching a specific campaign to recycle glass, today begins operation designed to improve recycling rates of packaging and paper.

Murcia is now at the national average percentage of waste recycled, with 20% recycling of general waste.

According to the European Union's minimum target in 2020 it is that 50% of generated municipal waste is recycled.

Evolution of selective collection has been very positive since the beginning because each year there are more concerned citizens on the need to recycle but there is still confusion about what goes into each container waste, especially packaging container.

Therefore, the awareness campaign on recycling that the Department of Public Works now launched in collaboration with Ecoembes, is twofold: to reach 30% of waste recycled in 2016 to reach 50% indicating the EU directive in 2020 and reduce the number of improper waste (wrong containers) arriving at selective container, which currently stands at 30%.

The intention is that Murcia know perfectly what waste and what can not be thrown out with each of the recycling bins.

To achieve this is to carry out this action in press, radio, advertising panels and social networking with an original and eye-catching campaign to avoid confusion when depositing waste.

Likewise, they will be placed in the yellow and blue containers stickers recalling the different uses.

Thus, it is reported that in the yellow container, packaging, do not throw buckets, diapers, small appliances, toys, hangers, CD, DVD or shoes.

In blue, carton, do not throw foil, cartons, diapers, napkins or handkerchiefs dirty and stained paper or cardboard.

According to existing data, in the case of paper since 1995, who began collecting selectively, it has multiplied by 17 kilograms collected, from 311,540 to a projected 5,271,532 kilograms this year.

Over the previous year an increase of 3.42%

In the case of light containers since 2000, who began collecting selectively, it has more than 20 kilograms collected, from 218,980 to a projected 4,709,100 kilograms this year.

Over the previous year an increase of 6.30%
