Murcia now requires the removal of the corrugated roofs in schools in the municipality (17/11/2015)

Micol Angeles says cases like Saavedra Fajardo Algezares schools and Carolina Codorniú in Churra

NOW MURCIA asked a municipal campaign against asbestos is made by removing the roofs of corrugated iron with some schools in the municipality and replacing them with others made from sustainable and not detrimental to the health of children materials.

The campaign also includes removal by the municipal services of products containing asbestos, particularly corrugated plates deposited in illegal dumps.

The motion on this issue that will present a municipal formation at the next plenary, will include the identification of other schools in the municipality that have this type of roof, and perform a communication campaign warning people of the risks of manipulation uralita.

Now Murcia is aware that at least schools Saavedra Fajardo in the hamlet of Algezares and Carolina Codorniú in Churra have this dangerous deck.

Micol Angeles Councilwoman recalled that asbestos is proven, since the 80s, causing cancer with high mortality, stresses that it has been used mostly in building materials, especially fribrocemento plates, popularly known as corrugated.

The use of asbestos is prohibited in the European Union since 2005 and in Spain since 2001 is illegal commercialization and use of all types.

"One of the most troubling issues is that a minimum amount of the agent under which an exposed can be considered safe is not recognized, therefore you can not establish that exposure of children in classrooms where there is this material is safe for their health, "says Micol.

Asbestos can cause illness when inhaled.

The fibers can become airborne or water because of the degradation of manufactured products containing it, such as corrugated boards.

Asbestos fibers can be released into the air when handling materials containing, in maintenance, repair and renovation of buildings or homes, and demolition.

Currently, the French and German governments spend, each more than a billion euros per year to compensation for asbestos-related diseases, and the European Commission speaks of 500,000 deaths in the coming years, an amount ten times caused accidents.

The issue is of such importance that in 2006 the EU launched a campaign against this element under the slogan: "Asbestos is deadly!".

The mayor noted that most buildings constructed in Spain between 1965 and 1984 contain asbestos, either in its entirety or in construction facilities.

"Of particular concern it is" he explains, "use in buildings used for school education, who have several decades of its asbestos corrugated plates has deteriorated."

Micol says this Murcia now calls "already been done in other municipalities in Spain long ago" and regrets that "if the corrugated iron was on the roof of City Hall instead of in the schools, as long the PP I would have taken away. "
