The doctoral thesis at the Faculty of Law of the University of Murcia by Piedad Lopez Milagros Martinez stressed in its report that it is essential to provide more resources to the prison to treat inmates who suffer from some form of mental illness.
This research, which has been rated as outstanding cum laude, notes the need to have networks of health resources that include complementary measures strictly pharmacological programs.
With them, adds the author of the thesis, it could enable the social normalization of the mentally ill and their integration into the community, preventing the failure of secularization from the prison.
The study states that it has been proved the high levels of marginalization that occurs between these inmates, as a result of sociobiográficas circumstances, health status and criminal history, all of which complicate the implementation of measures for the future rehabilitation and social reintegration of the prisoner.
To carry out this work, the author analyzed a sample of 93 men and nine women admitted to the prison psychiatric hospital Fontcalent (Alicante), aged between 18 and 65 years.
The doctoral thesis was supervised by professors from the University of Murcia David Lawrence dean of the Faculty of Law- and Eduardo Osuna Morillas, along with Ramon Arce, of the University of Santiago de Compostela.
