Murcia's change requests a plan against energy poverty (27/10/2015)

Councillor's change Murcia Margarita Guerrero has presented to the House on Thursday a motion to create a plan to combat energy poverty, with the aim of ensuring that no family residing in the city is left without the service of basic supplies, such as light, natural gas and butane.

Guerrero explained at a press conference that Murcia is the second capital of the country's poorest province, second only to Ceuta, a fact that has been linked to the rate of social exclusion and energy poverty, which in the region of Murcia amounts to 14.59 percent, ranking fifth.

Alongside this, the mayor has expressed concern over the increase in fuel poverty in Spain, which has tripled since 2007 to stand at 10 percent in 2013, while wages "have declined significantly since the beginning of the crisis ".

"Therefore, there has been an increase in the gap between income and energy prices," he argued Guerrero, who has also recalled that between 2007 and 2014 the electricity bill of an average household grew by 76 percent and 35 percent natural gas bill.

In this situation, the Councillor has considered "fundamental" that the City, as the closest to the public institution prioritizes attention to social emergencies and develop a plan that has a sufficient budget to address the most vulnerable groups.

It has also insisted that this plan is even more necessary because the social bond is "insufficient" and also covers only the electricity bill.

In this sense, he pointed out that this bond has excluded about 200,000 users since 2012, which does not guarantee social protection for the most disadvantaged.
