The Catholic University of Murcia inaugurated this afternoon the First International Congress on Olive Oil 'Current trends and new challenges in the olive oil sector ", organized by the institution and the Seneca Foundation.
The ceremony involved Estrella Nunez, rector of the UCAM Research;
director of Congress, José Antonio Gabaldon, and Fulgencio Perez Hernandez, CEO of Productions and Agrifood Market CARM, who highlighted the quality of olive oil produced in the region.
With an area of ​​21 thousand hectares of crops, "it is a sector that although quantity is not very important, we can not compete with other regions, whether in product quality," he qualified.

On the global situation of the sector has lectured the executive director of the International Olive Oil Council, Jean Louis Barjol.
As pointed out, Spain itself has an internal olive oil consumption of 500,000 tons, and production, depending on the year, of between 80,000 and one million 600 thousand.
"Spain represents on average 45% of world production of olive oil. And this means that what happens here impacts worldwide."
