The work of environmental recovery have been carried out in the River Segura as it passes through Murcia have allowed bringing to light again an inscription showing that the arches of the bridge of the dangers of Murcia were terminated on August 15, 1740. This discovery has been made possible the work of a team of archaeologists has found proof that the Old Bridge in Murcia meet this summer 275 years.
Specifically, this commemorative engraving is placed in the key North Dome Arch Bridge Hazards and says NVESTRA LADY DAY OF THE VLTIMA ASVMCION PVSO STONE IS YEAR 1740. As legend has it, with that Christian date as symbolic (August 15) the termination of the arches of the bridge marks.
That plaque was placed there by order of the director of the play, at the time Jaime Bort, who had been hired to finish the bridge, after the death of Toribio Martinez de la Vega.
The inscription in capital letter square signs and abbreviations typical of the era, is recorded on two consecutive blocks of 0.84 and 0.72 meters long, respectively, and 0.41 meters high.
Throughout history, Murcia has been affected by numerous floods, one of which in 1701 destroyed the old bridge.
After this disaster, the urgent need arose to build a new, more resilient infrastructure.
The teacher Toribio Martinez de la Vega, a key figure in the new project, presented as a solution to bridge two eyes (the former had three) having a marked elevation allowing save the hazards caused by the floods .. This lift the structure is clearly visible today as they clearly appreciate the slopes at the end of the Gran Via and just at the end of the bridge towards the Camachos square.
The works were auctioned in 1704, but did not begin to run until 1717. The bridge construction is not completed, after several lengthy interruptions and some modifications, until 1742 with the final contest of the architect Jaime Bort (1739-1742).
Estate Recovery
While the Old Bridge has been very valuable studies, during the dredging of the river they have also carried out other jobs that have allowed full recovery of water and historical heritage with which the city of Murcia.
Thus, another significant actions sediment has freed the "gallant" of the new mills, ie, the channel that carries water from the dam bridge to the gates of the mills.
On the other hand, fieldwork of archaeologists has served to know in depth the dam that is under the Bridge of hazards.
For a short time it has been left dry dam, allowing verify the accuracy of the implementation of the work plans reflecting Martinez de la Vega.
All these recovery actions undertaken by the CHS on water infrastructure have allowed better know the history of the city of Murcia and the historical evolution of the city around the Segura River.
The draft environmental recovery of the river Segura, which began in March 2014 and completed in May 2015, has been promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment and has had a budget of 4.2 million euros.
Thanks to these works, are drawn more than 150,000 tons of sediment, allowing the river to carry a greater flow and prevent the risk of flooding.
