A doctoral thesis at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Murcia José Domingo Cubillana Herrero says in its conclusions that the experience gained in the cochlear implant program at the hospital Virgen de la Arrixaca of Murcia can be helpful to other centers.
This research, which has been rated as outstanding cum laude, has been devoted to analyzing the program, which began to develop in that university hospital in 2003.
It was responding to the demands of the population with hearing problems, added the findings.
The cochlear implant is defined as an electronic device that replaces the internal outer ear, middle and and is able to pick up the sounds, transforming them into electrical impulses for transmission to the auditory nerve and restore the flow of auditory information to the brain.
The sample analyzed for the realization of the doctoral thesis consisted of 64 patients with an average age of 5.56 years and who were treated between January 2003 and December 2010.
The experience concludes the investigation is positive, which indicates that a similar model could be implemented in other hospitals.
The dissertation was directed by Professor of the University of Murcia Juan Angel Fernandez Hernandez.
