The nature and animal park Terra Natura Murcia has just become part of the European program of conservation leopard (Panthera pardus Kotiya).
The arrival of Leo, so called the only specimen of the species inhabiting the resort Murcia, is part of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP).
The specimen, a male of three years and 55 kilos of weight, lives in the recently released area is set in the Congo River and displayed still nervous about their new surroundings.
Leo incorporating the biological catalog of the park has made Murcia Terra Natura become one of the few Spanish zoos participating in the program to protect this species.
Those responsible for the complex expected within a few weeks the arrival of another male leopard, year and a half.
Sri Lanka leopard is the only large carnivore that has inhabited the island.
Moreover, it is the only species of leopard has evolved as the only large predator in its habitat.
Their biggest threats are man-made conflicts and deforestation generated.
It is estimated that in the wild they live only 800 individuals.
The EEP was created in 1986 in order to maintain a healthy population in the institutions that kept Leopards species and is the only captive management program that exists to this species worldwide.
Among the program's objectives is to maintain 90% of genetic diversity for 100 years, educate visitors of the threats to the species and engage in in-situ conservation.
