Ruben Juan Serna, candidate of Union Progress and Democracy for mayor of the city of Murcia, considered a necessity "to launch the Consistory mechanisms to better coexistence between pet owners and pets and other residents of the municipality" .
For example, "we intend to expand canine recreational areas in the municipality encompassing the town and the districts, and tougher sanctions for those who do not collect the droppings of these animals."
"We want to avoid situations such as those that occur in children's areas where animal droppings by incivility appear. You have to respect those who have pets, but also neighbors who do not".
"It's something very simple that also facilitate a balanced development of the animals."
Another of the measures which UPyD proposed is tougher penalties for neglect and mistreatment of animals.
According to the FAPAM (Federation of Associations for Animal Protection), over 300 000 pets are "evicted" from their homes each year, which means that every two minutes a pet is abandoned in Spain, "quite a sad record at European level, "says Serna.
