The UCAM investigates drug elimination in sewage treatment plants (30/04/2015)

San Antonio Catholic University of Murcia held the Third Conference on Integrated Water Cycle and the Environment.

In this issue, the central theme has been the 'environmental problems and solutions in the water cycle. "

In this context, José Javier Padilla, professor of civil engineering degree and researcher of Water Engineering Group, Maritime and Environmental UCAM, presented the "Preliminary study of drugs in WWTP (Wastewater Treatment Plant) in the Region of Murcia.

This study was conducted in twelve sewage Murcia province, analyzing the presence of four types of drugs (carbamazepine, ketoprofen, naproxen and dioflenaco) in both the water entering the treatment plant and the water that comes once treated.

Nine of the twelve sewage had the presence of drugs in the treated water.

Professor Padilla said in his speech that "drugs are not completely eliminated although it is true that with the data we have now look like they are not worrying amounts to humans".

He also stressed that "this is a preliminary study. We must make new research and keep working to get final data and propose concrete solutions."

In the day has it been Carlos Lardín, responsible Holdings ESAMUR (Entity of Sanitation and Wastewater Treatment of Murcia), who evaluated positively the fact that the UCAM is investigating this matter: "It is very interesting and so ESAMUR is betting on this type of research. We are in the beginning to set parameters of what it encounters in sewage treatment plants. It's great to collect all possible data so that in the future the competent authority may legislate to the necessary investments are made to the treatment plants can adapt to the new requirements. "

While you get to that point it seems most reasonable is to bring prevention to households: "When you have to remove drugs use collection points there in pharmacies and do not use toilets as garbage."

In a similar vein Maria Tejera, responsible for the control of discharges of the Municipal Water and Sanitation of Murcia (EMUASA), stating that until more data and develop better techniques cleansing "the main recommendation is prevention also expressed in origin. It is easier to avoid pouring treat pollutant. Efforts are being made in this regard because it is very difficult to treat these compounds because the facilities are not ready. "
