Thomas Bach, IOC president will be sworn in on Monday Doctor Honoris Causa by the UCAM (20/03/2015)

The Catholic University San Antonio de Murcia is ready for the investiture ceremony of Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee as Doctor Honoris Causa to be held on Monday, March 23 at 11:00 am at the Temple of the Monastery of Los We jerónimos.

Academics, politics and sport have confirmed their attendance for this historic day.

Among them are Alejandro Blanco, Spanish Olympic Committee president, and David Cal athletes, Saul Craviotto, Sete Benavides, Joel Gonzalez, Marga Crespi and Diego Ruiz.

Thomas Bach was Olympic champion in fencing at the 1976 Summer Olympics and is president of the IOC since September 2013, replacing in the position to Belgian Jacques Rogge.

It will be the second Doctor Honoris Causa of the field of sport appointed by the UCAM after Vicente del Bosque, national football coach.

Born in Wuzburgo (Germany) in 1953. A lawyer by profession, speaks fluent German, English, French and Spanish.

During his tenure want to focus on two main objectives: to improve the selection of candidate cities to host the Olympic Games and make more effective the fight against doping in sport.

These merits and many others walking the biography of President of the International Olympic Committee, will be mentioned by Antonio Sánchez Pato, dean of the Faculty of Sport of the UCAM, the 'laudatio' that serve to enumerate the reasons that make Thomas Bach worthy of the highest academic distinction of the Catholic University of Murcia.

Thomas Bach met a year ago in a working session at the headquarters of the COE in Madrid with Jose Luis Mendoza, president of the UCAM, and Alejandro Blanco, the work done in 'college sports' for athletes high level they can reconcile their training and competitions with their education.

This unique European model is based on a solid relationship with the Spanish Olympic Committee.

At that meeting, Bach praised this project and offered the support of the International Olympic Committee for implementation in several Latin American countries through their respective Olympic committees.

Uruguay and Brazil have already launched a few months ago.

Not only Thomas Bach has recognized the work of the UCAM for athletes.

The European Union has funded a project led by the Catholic University of Murcia to develop, improve and export their athletes tutoring model to other countries in Europe.

Four universities in the UK, Italy, Malta and Greece have been the first to join this project.

The work of the UCAM for sport goes beyond the scholarship, sponsorship and athlete support so they can study.

The university has four own teams: basketball (ACB), football (Second Division B) and table tennis (male and female Superdivision).

Besides sponsoring twenty different sports teams like football, handball, swimming, athletics and volleyball.

Obviously also highlights the work of the UCAM in terms of teaching and research.

Through Science Degree in Physical Activity and Sports, Vocational Training (TAFAD) and graduate degrees, the university trains professionals who come to the labor market fully prepared to work as professionals in any field of the sports world .

Great work in research with the launch of two research centers in high performance sports (UCAM Sports Center and La Manga Club) is also performed.

Among recent studies highlight the prevention of sudden death, one of the major problems facing the sport today.
