The Infanta Cristina Bacons Bridge School won first prize in the organic school garden in the region (23/02/2015)

The first and second prize will receive 1,000 € and 500 € to continue investing in the activity of the organic garden school

This evening was held delivery Organic School Gardens prize Murcia in its first edition, promoted by the Organic Farming Council of the Region of Murcia (CAERM), the University of Murcia, the Agroecology Network and Ecodevelopment Murcia (RAERM) and the Ministry of Education and University of Murcia, in collaboration with Healthy Living and Triodos association.

The aim of this contest is to reward schools for primary and secondary that have developed during the school year activity grow their own organic garden.

"It's a way to value traditional vegetable gardens and orchards while students are educated on respect for nature and the environment, as well as the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle," says David Samper, president of CAERM .

The first prize went to CEIP Infanta Cristina Bacons Bridge, the second prize went to the CEIP St. Pius X of Murcia and the second prize has received the IES Rambla de Puerto Lumbreras Nogalte.

The first and second prizes are endowed with 1,000 € and 500 € respectively to continue investing in the activity of the organic garden school.

According to Francisco Marín, head of ecological school garden school Infanta Cristina, winner center, "We are very excited about this award after 6 years betting on teaching our students, aged between 3 and 11 years, the importance of sustainability".

In relation to what students learn through the school garden initiative, Francisco Marín explains that can work directly subjects like Environmental Awareness, Social and Natural, but also "learn values ​​such as recycling, energy saving and consumption responsible. For example, not only do not use pesticides, but we recycle waste for reuse and return to the earth. "

At this time of year in college Infanta Cristina are picking seasonal vegetables such as lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower and peas were planted at the beginning of the school year.

"Children also learn to be patient and see that the efforts bear results. The vegetable is very good and they know they have in their hands a product with qualities that are not found in a supermarket," he concludes.

Currently, the Region of Murcia has nearly a hundred registered schools that have chosen to include in their activities organic school gardens.

"Gestures like these contribute to tomorrow's world has greater environmental awareness," says Samper.
