The doctoral thesis at the University of Murcia by María del Mar Pastor Bravo has alerted the nurses to carry out activities for the prevention of FGM in the vicinity of families from countries where the practice is common.
The doctoral thesis, conducted at the Faculty of Nursing at the University adds it takes to develop campaigns to raise awareness about rights violations involving this practice and fight for their eradication.
To conduct this research, the author, who has obtained the same grade of outstanding cum laude, took into account the data provided by 24 women from Senegal, Nigeria and Gambia residing in the Murcia region for more than 15, in some cases.
These women were mutilated in childhood or adolescence, "without consent, without analgesia and under very poor hygienic measures," the doctoral thesis.
All of them revealed that the woman in charge of practicing the intervention acquires a high social status within the community to which he belongs.
The research has also check the consequences for the physical, psychological and sexual health have these genital mutilation.
The thesis was directed by Professor of the University of Murcia María Pilar Almansa and professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) María Antonieta Rubio Tyrell.
