A doctoral dissertation at the University of Murcia for Raquel Lorente has developed a database to characterize the wind in the Iberian Peninsula further.
The uses of the study, which was detected trends of wind speed in the past 50 years include the calculation, so that a person can know the energy produced by a certain type of wind turbine in a specific location that makes the wind potential .
Similarly, comparison of observational data with modeled data has been used to propose and implement improvements in the physics of surface processes, have an important application in the future in this area of research.
"Expanding our knowledge of wind behavior can benefit many fields of research with business applications, such as wind energy sector and pollutant dispersion," argues the author.
For the preparation of the work, has created a database using wind observations and regional simulations and statistics 514 automatic weather stations, provided by different institutions both Spanish and Portuguese.
Wind simulated data were generated using a Atmospheric and verified with available observations climate model.
The thesis was directed by Juan Pedro Montávez, professor Regional Atmospheric Modelling Group at the University of Murcia and Pedro Ángel Jiménez Muñoz, a researcher at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in the US.
