Residents and traders know firsthand the extension of Line 1 tram to the neighborhood of Carmen (14/10/2014)

Councilman Traffic and Transportation, Javier Iniesta, explained, in detail, the feasibility study of the extension of Line 1 tram to Carmen neighborhood residents and merchants in the area.

Thus, the event, held at the Cultural Center of Carmen, was attended by representatives of the Association of Merchants Murcia Center, Triangle Association Merchants Association Carmen, Association of Carmelite Traders, Merchants Association Silverware and Tatters, Municipal Board Infante and Carmen, Federation of Neighborhood Associations, Radio Taxi, Carmen Neighborhood Association, Neighborhood Association Carmelites and Center for Women's Carmen.

In addition, the Councillor for Education and District del Carmen, Lola Sanchez and Transport managers Murcia (José Enrique Pérez) and Murcia tram (Severiano Arias) have also been present at the meeting.

Iniesta has explained the route, path, stops and other details of this extension of the tramline.

He has also listed the three operating system options:

1 Y: Continuous line from universities and commercial centers of the north to the Carmen Station.

15-minute frequency service to commercial centers and 5 minutes in the rest of the line.

It is the most expensive option and requires 19 tram units.

2: Maintenance of the current Line 1, as it functions with 10 minute frequency extension and shuttle to the station del Carmen, with 6 minute frequency.

It is the next option in cost and require a fleet of 17 trams.

3: Two lines, Line 1 from public university to the station del Carmen, often 7.5 minutes, and Line 2 connected from Plaza Circular to shopping malls.

It is the least cost option and only requires 15 trams.

He currently has 11, so only 4 new trams, which can be stored in existing garages would be required.

Although the tram substantially improve traffic throughout the area of influence, the Gran Vía is the great benefit because, for decades, is enduring an intense traffic of both private vehicles and public transport buses with levels of very high air and noise pollution.

The introduction of the tram is a historic opportunity to change this situation and to make the Gran Via a friendly and satisfactory urban space.

Thus, the study provides a reduction of traffic going from 16,178 vehicles per day to 8,975.

The extension of Line 1 tram will be an important decrease in the use of private cars and a large change in the modal split model where the share of public transport in the current mechanized travel would increase from 15.1% to 24.83%.

The feasibility study also provides for the extension of the tram to El Carmen, a dramatic increase in demand for use of the tram from current data.

Thus it is anticipated that 43,200 trips / day, representing 16 million trips / year, between 200% and 350% over using the tram on the current status of Line 1 can occur.

The introduction of the tram will lead to a substantial improvement in the levels of noise and air pollution of the ways that you will pass your path.

This is expected to reduce 650 tons of CO2 per year.

In short, with this extension, other objectives are pursued:

- Comply with the electoral program in which this extension is proposed to Carmen

- Delivering the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan which states that the tram is the backbone of public transport in the city, this being a historic opportunity to rearrange the traffic in the city

- Reactivate the economic and commercial activity in the town and Barrio del Carmen.

- Reorder Public transport system in the city of Murcia.

- Achieve social, environmental and improving urban scene benefits.
