The oil slows silkworm skin cancer, according to a doctoral thesis at the University of Murcia (19/06/2014)

Oil silkworm chrysalis delays the appearance of skin aging or skin cancer, according to one of the conclusions of the doctoral thesis at the Faculty of Medicine by Ana Maria Gil Ortega.

This research, which has been rated as outstanding cum laude, has found, after tests on three groups of mice than in those who were treated with this oil "the appearance of skin lesions occurred with a delay of six to nine weeks. "

Furthermore, two of the animals subjected to the study suffered no tumor lesions, as assessed at the end of the experiment.

To conduct this research, the author used a total of sixty mice were subjected to ultraviolet radiation sixty minutes per session, three times a week for a total of 80 sessions.

The animals were divided into three groups, one of them control, while a second was treated with sweet almond oil prior to irradiation, and the last with oil silkworm chrysalis.

All mice showed the characteristic alterations of cutaneous photoaging and photocarcinogenesis, but with some significant differences in the members of the latter group.

Thus, they delayed the presentation of cutaneous lesions of six to nine weeks compared to the other groups was observed, with two of the specimens showed no tumor lesions.

In addition, the mean area of lesions in mice treated with oil silkworm chrysalis was lower by 59.14 percent compared to the control group, in which the reduction did not reach 41 percent.

The dissertation concludes that "this suggests the photoprotective properties chrysalis oil, probably due to the action containing sericin, which is a potent antioxidant."

This scientific work was led by professors from the University of Murcia Francisco José Gómez García, Paloma Sánchez-Pedreño Guillén Vicente and Vicente Ortega.
