The solar car UCAM, unique in the region to obtain an official mark in the Shell Eco-Marathon Rotterdam (25/05/2014)

The Shell Eco-Marathon Europe, held in Rotterdam last weekend, attended, in various forms, over 200 teams and more than 3,000 students from around the world.

Among them, a group of students and professors at the UCAM, who put at stake the Sun Rider's career 'electric prototypes' competition in which managed to reach 21st position after running against rivals France, England, Germany, Belgium and Italy, with a mark of 235 km / kWh.

Thus, the UCAM Racing Team was the only team in the Region of Murcia scored an official mark, to successfully overcome in the circuit the two disputed batches after passing scrutineering the first.

"That means we were able to build a vehicle that originally 100% satisfied with demanding technical specifications, design and security required by the organization," says Rafael Melendreras, team manager and assistant dean of the Engineering Degree in Systems Telecommunication.

Google Glass

As part of the many initiatives of the Catholic University of Murcia who use the Google Glass for teaching and research, the UCAM Racing Team featured this innovative device for the pilot, during the race, could communicate with the system, including making a recording travel to conduct safety studies later.

"Driving a car and produces a very different feeling in the small space you have and the visibility," says Juan Carlos Moya, a student of 4th year of the Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Sport of the UCAM and pilot Sun Rider.

For the Shell Eco-Marathon, the UCAM Racing Team raised a number of innovations in the car, ranging from the design of a new system of efficient traction off the wheels, to the installation of a network of sensors and a system Joint compound electronically Arduino and the Android operating system to give information about the speed, position or temperature, energy consumption, through telemetry and communication.

"I think our students have played a full and demanding quality work, with little room for significant improvement in the forthcoming edition of the Solar Race", says Rafael Melendreras.

By then, along with a significant reduction in power consumption, the team will try to develop a photovoltaic solar collection system for high performance.

This is the third consecutive year that the UCAM Racing Team participates in the race car Ultra Low Power Shell Eco-Marathon.

The project has the support of the main sponsor BANCO SANTANDER, plus TUBE MURCIA, Technology Centres Metal and Energy and the Environment, HERO, GIMAR, NZI, NEOSISTEC, VRELIA and LUMEN ELECTRIC.
