The work will lower one meter high from the riverbed and allow restore hydraulic capacity that was in the fifties
This action joins the improvement in the quality of the waters of the Segura has been achieved in recent years thanks to Plan purification and reuse of the Region of Murcia
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment will begin work for the removal of sediment in the river Segura in Murcia city.
The environmental recovery project has already begun with a biological treatment, while machines will enter the channel in May, after the Spring Festival and the bridge.
The Segura basin (CHS), funded by the Directorate General of the Ministry of Water, plans to invest a total of 4,311,450 euros in dredging.
The timing to complete the performance is April 2015.
The area where sediment removal is performed almost all urban riverbed, between the bridge of the A-30, west of the city of Murcia, and the bridge of Fica, east, a stretch of 2.4 kilometers in which the waters are partially dammed.
It is expected that the river bed is lowered by one meter, which will restore hydraulic capacity he had the runway in the 50s.
The islets of sediments that have been formed in the urban runway over the years will also be deleted.
After the performance, the river will have a 50-meter wide and a low-water channel of 10 meters.
The work is a new step in the work of regeneration of the river, which has allowed, in just ten years, the quality of the waters of the Segura move from being the most polluted Spain to lower pollution in all sections.
This process has been recognized by numerous international publications and has been possible thanks to an intense effort in the development of treatment systems and reuse undertaken by the Government of the Region of Murcia and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment resources.
In all, some 150,000 tons of sediment will be removed.
To minimize impact, has been performed in advance the bioremediation treatment with the application of a bacterial-enzymatic product on the sediments.
Thanks to this process is to eliminate odors that may be generated during dredging operations.
The removal of sediment will be done through a system-drying areas to while working in each sector, bounded by levees, the water will continue to run for the rest.
Thus, the urban stretch of the river is divided into ten subsections (nine in the city and one further upstream, between Manterola and motorway) on which work consecutively, beginning and ending in La Fica El Malecon.
The previous studies in laboratory on samples taken from the riverbed in Murcia show that sediments can be reused to restore the meandering Segura by filing and mixed with the existing soil.
To this end we have chosen two groves located downstream of the sewage Murcia Este, which are in part been abandoned and will be graded and rehabilitated after the deposit of materials.
Collaboration with the University of Murcia
The Confederation has reached an agreement with the University of Murcia to perform tasks technical advice during construction, in order to minimize the impact of work on urban wildlife channel.
The actions have been agreed with an interdisciplinary commission created by the UMU, which not only researchers but also university environmental associations and representatives of fishermen from Murcia, who have held a series of meetings with the engineers responsible for the work involved CHS.
The work of the University will also serve to conduct research about animal life in the river Segura.
