"The belief that a boy will not speak for using only signs is totally unsubstantiated."
So says Lucia Diaz, Director of Special Education Center Holy Christ of Mercy, which this morning has taught at the conference UCAM 'alternative communication systems', part of the Journey of Autism and Behavior.
During his presentation, he has lectured mainly about augmentative communication system complementation speaking.
"Working with other communication alternatives that gets children achieve greater capacity"
One of the challenges in this conference was to provide information for future professionals to improve their intervention with people who have these disorders.
In this sense, Isabel Mengual, teacher grades in education, psychology and Capacitas UCAM program stresses the importance for families to have information, and the study of the disorder itself.
"In terms of research, we considered many objectives. It's a very open and very unknown field. They are many ways that you can keep working," he says.
One of the conclusions that have been reached during the Day of Autism and Behavior reveals the need to work with the potential of children with autism.
Isabel's own Mengual states that "we must start with what the child can give us, not what we can get. Thereafter we have to build, and so is being done in most of the interventions."
It also stresses that "we must not forget that the child does not come with nothing, but with a repertoire of behaviors that are the basis for further learning."
To end this massive conference, was held a table made up of good practices Francisco Tortosa, Center for Special Education The Boqueras; Nagui Takaoka of Astrada, and M ª Dolores Prison, CIF Director Gabriel Pérez Jail.
