The Spanish university population has an intermediate-low adherence to the Mediterranean diet and a high percentage of students does not meet the recommendations of foods such as grains, nuts, legumes, fruits, vegetables and oil.
This is one of the conclusions of the study "Dietary habits and lifestyles Spanish university. Consumption pattern of fermented beverages," prepared by the Spanish Nutrition Foundation (FEN) and presented today at the Faculty of Biology, University of Murcia.
The objective of the research, with a sample of 978 students from 21 universities (including the University of Murcia) for 2012/2013 is, in the words of the project manager said Foundation, Emma Ruiz, "know first eating habits and lifestyles of Spaniards to evaluate and determine the weaknesses university, which will develop actions to improve those weaknesses. "
In view of these results, explains Emma Ruiz, shows that college students "have an overall diet that deviates from current recommendations for the consumption of different food groups and patterns of the Mediterranean diet."
Regarding the pattern of fermented beverages such as beer or wine, "university you perform moderate consumption (less than one beer a day, 56%) of the first, accompanied by food (70%) and friends (95% ) and more than half of young people who consume beer in moderation becomes habitual physical activity, giving no association between the intake of these beverages and increased body mass. "
As for body weight, 72.9% of university is within the classification of normal weight normal-weight person to height-but a greater amount of protein and fat and lower in carbohydrates observed .
Research has also indicated that water is the major beverage, although consumption is below the recommendations.
59.5% of students who participated in the sample performs some type of physical activity or sport usually with increased smoking in men (68.5%) than women (51.8%).
The most popular activities by university are running, swimming, gymnastics and cycling, while, by geographical area, the students do more sport and lift Northwest (69.7% and 66.5%, respectively) the center (50.8%).
