The doctoral thesis Colodro Lucia Conde, held at the Faculty of Psychology of the University of Murcia, has analyzed the role of biological and psychological factors in women and their family and social environment, in decisions relating to food newborn.
The study states that about half of the differences between women in relation to the decision to initiate and maintain lactation is due to genetic factors, probably related to hormonal response or milk production.
The rest of these differences indicates the thesis, which has been rated as outstanding cum laude, by the family and social environment is explained, such as the support of a partner or working conditions.
The author also examines the evolution of breastfeeding rates in the Region of Murcia since 1960 until the late twentieth century.
The results indicate that the duration of breastfeeding was higher in the 60s, in the 70s to lower and start to pick up again from mid-80s.
The research work has found no conclusive relationship between the educational level of mothers and breastfeeding duration.
At times, mothers with more education would breastfeed for less time, while in others, as in recent years, it is these that lengthen over breastfeeding.
The thesis was supervised by professors from the University of Murcia and Juan Ramón Rosa María Ordoñana Limiñana.
