Researchers at the Teaching Unit of Anatomy and Embryology, University of Murcia have partially reconstructed the skeleton of one of the dogs who lived with Chalcolithic man about 4,000 years ago.
The researchers, led by professors Francisco Gil Cano and Jose Maria Vazquez Autón have worked for four years in the identification of some 2,000 bones or bone fragments belonging to different species of domestic animals, especially canines, from the archaeological site "Camino del Molino "Caravaca de la Cruz.
The first results of the study, were presented today at the Faculty of Veterinary reading and defense of the dissertation's degree from Cristina Ruiz García-Glass, will know precisely some features of dogs that lived in the region of Murcia 4,000 years.
The dog rebuilt, which has been given the name "Fibula" corresponds to the species Canis lupus familiaris, of medium height and well proportioned, which fed mainly bones.
According to the study, "Fibula" in life suffered a major fracture of the tibia and fibula of the right hindlimb, which should make you notable limitations in the performance of his duties as pastor or assistant dog in the hunt.
