110 families benefit each year of service in home respite offered by the Department of Social and Health Biernestar.
This service is for carers of dependent people and allows a professional to take care of the person a few hours a week while the caregiver operates.
Respite was launched for the first time, a pioneer in the region, in 2002, and since then until September 2013, it has served a total of 936 caregivers of dependents.
It works with an average of 110 cases per year, with a high level of satisfaction among service users.
So far this year has treated 83 people.
The City Council approved the contract documents and technical specifications for this service, with an investment of 454,000 euros, and a duration of two years.
Users are large dependents in need of care and ongoing monitoring; dominated by people who have a disability psychophysical 46.94%, 15.31% have a mental disability, 35.71% have a physical disability, and 2 , 04% have sensory disabilities.
The 71.43% of the people served are over 65 years, the 23.47% between 18 and 65 years and 5.10% are minors.
For caregivers who usually handle these people, 71.43% are in the age group between 18 and 65 years, 28.57% are over 65.
In many cases this service is the only time they have older people who care for their spouses or adult children with disabilities.
Caregivers are mostly women, in a 87.76% and 17.14% male.
In addition, respite care promotes job creation and that an average of 22 home assistants work part time as well as technical and administrative.
