The spokesman for IU-Greens in the city of Murcia, Esther Herguedas, said today that his organization would oppose the sale or privatization of the use of the Old Jail.
Herguedas has expressed concern that the announcement of the session to hold a competition for ideas to shape the future of the former prison is "a maneuver to its subsequent disposal in any particular."
"One thing is that there be a contest for the execution of a specific project, and another thing in the contest also have to establish the use," he underlined.
The mayor said that the decision corresponds to the political uses and can not be entrusted to a contest of ideas.
In this regard, he argued that the uses be established according to the needs of citizens and, in the case of prison, "will set the service most needed in the municipality and in the area where the property is located" .
It also underlined the added value jail for his location as it is located in the center of town and in an area where it is needed provision of new public facilities.
As for the condition of the building, Herguedas considered "an excuse" that the City claims to have to wait to have full ownership to intervene in it, since by its powers, "it was required to have previous owners required to maintain in good condition the building, something he did not. "
"Moreover,-he pointed Herguedas-the collapse of the dome of the panopticon was a result of the abandonment of the municipal functions."
Also explained that "if in fact the government team wants to do something other than advertising in this building will prove it by making the corresponding reservation of an item in the next municipal budgets."
