Murcia retrieves the old jail property to turn it into a new cultural landmark (30/09/2013)

The City acquired the property at the tax office, which gives two plots which established its new headquarters

The Delegate of Finance has made ​​a symbolic handover to the Mayor of the keys to the building

The City Council and, therefore, the city definitely has recovered the old jail property.

This morning the agreement was formalized by public deed before a notary public in a ceremony in which the mayor intervened, Miguel Angel House, and Deputy of Economy and Finance, Just Parejo.

To acquire ownership of the building, the City shall pay to the Ministry of Economy and Finance-right-holder, a total of 99,792 euros.

This amount is derived from the difference in value of this historic property, valued at 12,116,509 euros, with the plots that the City performs the swap, valued at a total of 12,016,716 euros, with a total area of ​​nearly 8,000 m2.

In this land, located between Juan Carlos and Juan de Borbon, the Tax Agency is planning to build its future headquarters.

House has announced that the municipal officers soon made a visit to the property to check its condition, assess the situation and meet the need for any maintenance action.

Thus, the City is able to recover other public space located in a strategic location of the city, continuing the initiative launched by the Mayor of Murcia, Miguel Ángel Cámara, for Murcia to enjoy iconic buildings of the city.

This achievement adds to the already made for the municipality, and the recovery and rehabilitation of the environment Artillery Barracks as a cultural, educational and recreational for Murcia, creating sculptural spaces, rebuilding the Municipal Center Puertas de Castilla the reopening of the theaters Romea and Circus, or the project of creating the Madman, Museum of Art, Design and Environment, along with FICA.

Half a century in prison

The old prison was opened in 1929 and remained in operation as provincial prison for half a century or so.

It was built on land located in the Torre de la Marquesa worth 23,000 pesetas, with a final budget of nearly 1.3 million pesetas.

Until it opened, the prisoners were in very poor conditions in the former prison of King Street Rod.
