More than fifty students participate in a pilot project to establish safe routes to walk to their schools
Parliament and the European Commission have chosen the city of Murcia to carry out the activities of the European Mobility Week (SEM13), framed within the European Year of Citizenship, to be held from 16 to 22 next September, with the aim of raising awareness about the need to change travel behavior and improve air quality.
Under the slogan 'Move for cleaner air!', The European Mobility Week is intended to reflect the power of citizens to help improve urban air quality through their mobility options.
According to the director general of the European Union Foreign Affairs, Carmen Sandoval, "within the activities of the European Year of Citizenship, is the European Mobility Week, with which we aim to promote sustainable mobility improving air quality and therefore, our quality of life. "
"It is the public aware that they have an important role to play, since small changes in our travel habits, such as cycling instead of driving, opt for public transport or the choice of walking can improve our quality of life, "noted Sandoval.
Air Quality and Mobility
The air quality and mobility are the axes of the European Mobility Week, the activities are organized by the Presidential and the city of Murcia in collaboration with the Office of the European Parliament and the European Commission Representation in Spain.
Leisure activities, workshops and talks on mobility are some of the proposals that citizens can find out over the next week in Murcia.
Among them is an activity called 'Park (ing) Day', which will be sold for more than fifty parking spaces, situated in Alfonso X El Sabio, for the enjoyment and use of the citizens.
In about 700 square meters, divided into 28 areas (coinciding with the member states of the European Union), which is adapted for use as public parks all day, open all day from 10:00 to 20:30 hours.
The use of space, usually reserved for parking in one of the main streets of the city, serve to reflect some of the singularities of the 28 countries that comprise the European Union.
Safe Routes to School
More than fifty students, aged between 10 and 11 years (5th and 6th Primary Education), will participate in the 18, 19 and 20 September in a pilot project that aims to establish a route safe for children to go walk to their respective schools, guided by instructors.
The centers participating in the project are Our Lady of Bethlehem, Mary Doe Maroto and Penafiel, with the collaboration of the Municipal Police of Murcia, which offer lectures to the students in the classroom on sustainable mobility and road safety.
Finally, on September 24, the Moneo building will host a forum where experts from public and private sector, both national and local, will discuss sustainable urban mobility.
Among the topics emphasizes the study of the best practices of mobility and sustainable transport in other cities, the Regional Plan for the Region of Murcia for Air Quality, and the proposed extension of the tramway in Murcia for connection to the network railway.
